"The U.S. military forces running operations against Iran are publicly saying they're using a variety of advanced tools to prosecute their operations. That's to crunch data, bringing work down that normally took days or hours down to mere seconds," says Bloomberg reporter Katrina Manson.

Competing National Strategies

The race to dominate AI defense technology reveals two distinct structural approaches. The United States continues to rely on a partnership model, collaborating with traditional defense contractors like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon alongside technology companies. However, this strategy faces friction, as seen in the recent tension between the Pentagon and AI companies over ethical guardrails and safety protocols.

Conversely, China’s "military-civil fusion" strategy, overseen by President Xi Jinping, seeks to erase the barriers between civilian technological progress and military application. This creates a systemic advantage for Beijing, as military requirements are often baked into the design of its aviation and drone technologies from inception, rather than retrofitted as an afterthought.

David Haar, CEO of Seconda AI, which recently secured a research contract with Japan’s Ministry of Defense, emphasizes that the goal is not merely to automate, but to improve data synthesis across land, sea, and air. His firm is developing visual language models that can function on-device, ensuring that assets like drones can analyze information locally even when disconnected from a central network.

"In the democratic military tradition, we expect that a human will always make the final decision. But if you're sitting on a ship, for example, and there's a hypersonic cruise missile heading toward you, there might only be seconds before it arrives. We're going to have to trust the machine will know better than us," notes Gus MacLachlan.

The Path Forward

As the military-technical landscape evolves, the challenge lies in creating "human-out-of-the-loop" thresholds. While commanders generally agree that human oversight is essential for complex engagements, the rapid pace of warfare may eventually necessitate automated responses for specific high-speed threats. The ongoing friction between private tech firms and defense establishments will likely define the future of these systems, as governments struggle to balance the need for rapid innovation with the necessity of maintaining control over lethal force.
